I've been to pretty much every japanese food restaurant in edmonton. This food is decent value for the amount of food and type of food you get. The sushi is pretty good, but not blow my mind great. The thing that disappointed me the most was the sashimi. It was not fresh and some pieces were still frozen when bitten into. It had an off taste to it. Our party brushed it off the first time, but when we went back again, we had the same issue. The sashimi was definitely not fresh. When we asked the staff if there was anything wrong with their sashimi, they said that it was an off day at the market where they get their fish from. Considering this has happened twice, the market which they get their cuts from must not be very reliable or fresh.. They were hesitant on replacing our food so we just asked for it to be taken off the bill. Overall, the sushi is alright, but their sashimi isn't very good. I would return if i'm in the area and absolutely craving japanese, but this would definitely not be my top pick for japanese food in edmonton.

Lastweek I went to Ichiban with a couple of friends, the food was much like any other japanese resturant. I did not feel like a valued customer, it took 10 minutes to get the bill. I was expecting something better.

I went to Ichiban on the weekend, and while a little hard to find in a strip mall on 149 St, it was well worth it.

Everyone was nice enough to let me devour the baked scallop by myself, and the misonnaise sauce (miso + mayonnaise) had me scooping it up with my chopsticks. For $2.95 you can't go wrong. Ichiban offers many types of rolls, my favorite (of the ones I've tried) being the Mexican roll with tiny bits of tempura and a satisfying spicy kick!

My favorite dish of the night was the beef tataki and ponzu sauce. I almost agree with the review below that the ponzu sauce is a dish to its own (almost). Rumor has it this place has a following on Facebook and I can see why.

This is honestly the best sushi restaurant in all of Alberta. Once anyone tries it, they don't go anywhere else.

Food is always very fresh and delicious. They have a number of very creative and interesting rolls. My favorite is the Rock Star (maki with shrimp tempura and spicy scallop)! The beef tataki is the best I've ever tried (I could drink the ponzu sauce).

Great value for the money. Reasonably priced and the portions are good.
