Having heard so many great things about Nello's, I was really excited to finally have an opportunity to eat there.

My anticipation quickly turned to stunned disbelief. The staff acted like they were of royal lineage when in reality they were(GASP!)just waiters and waitresses. The restaurant was very busy and when our food arrived, it was overcooked and tasteless. The size of the portions was also disappointing given the price charged. This info was passed on to our server.

Shortly thereafter, an argumentative, gnome-like character who was sweating profusely appeared at our table. Imagine my surprise to discover this was our cook. Rather than acknowledge (or even consider) there was perhaps a problem or two with our meal, he became increasingly rude and obnoxious, stating he had been a cook for 35 years. I did not want to further agitate the dear man by pointing out that cooking for 35 years and cooking WELL for 35 years was not necessarily one and the same thing. Or that you do not become abusive to paying customers when they do not comment favourably on a meal. It is in poor taste.

I will never eat at Nello's again. As I am free to spend my money where ever I so choose, I will frequent restaurants where the food is tasty and the staff have some common social graces.

I've gone to this restaurant twice...

The first time, we stood by the door for more than 5 minutes while the staff talked to each other and acted like we weren't there (and we were the only diners there!). It was a little weird. As we were ready to walk out, signs of life emerged. The person who finally ended up seating us acted like he was a king and we were his lowly subjects, so I'm assuming he was the owner. Or, maybe he was just some old elderly guy who was feeling angry that he didn't have a better job at his age? I'm really just not sure what it was, but dealing with the public was clearly not one of his strong points. Then, lucky for us, a young girl took our order and in the end the pasta we had was tasty.

The second time we went, the restaurant was very busy. We ordered 2 ceasar salads and 4 dishes of pasta. The ceasar salads came back on one plate/platter and we were told to share it! That was $27 of ceasar salad on a plate and I thought maybe Ceasar himself had come back from the dead and made it for us for it to be sooooo expensive and small. When we asked why it was all on one plate, the waitress said that this is how they do it there.

Then when our pasta dishes came, the shrimp were like little hockey pucks and the sauce had no flavor at all. When the waitress asked if we liked it, we simply said that it wasn't that good this time(although we had it before and it was good that time). She told us that they weren't expecting the night to be so busy so there was only one cook in the back and this was causing the problem. Okay. We didn't make a fuss at all and just kept eating.

Next thing you know, as we were trying to get the hockey puck shrimp swallowed, the uptight cook is standing at our table, demanding to know why we were making "his life so hard?" Oh...my....God!!! Maybe if he spent his time cooking instead of hassling the paying customers, the food would be better! We couldn't believe it and have laughed about his outrageous behavior many times since. Actually "Nellos" is now our one word simile for bad food, bad service, bad manners. It's our barmoter for BAD, BAD, BAD!

$160 later I can tell you we will NEVER go back to that restaurant. With so many other really GOOD italian restaurants to pick from in St. Albert and Edmonton, I'd only recommend Nello's to someone I had absolutely no respect for because I know they would be in good company there and feel at home.

Although the management is a little bizarre at Nello's (no reservations for under 6 people, no take out except for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) it still remains one of my favorite restaurants.

Although most entrees are priced around $20, the food is amazing, and the portion sizes guarantee lunch the next day. The bruschetta is absolutely amazing, and their penne saporito is the best pasta I have ever had. The amaretto gelato rolled in crushed almonds is the best way to end the meal, unfortunately I usually dont have the room for dessert!

A sign in the entry way states that Rome was not built in a day, and neither is their food, a warning that the service might be a little slow. I have always found their service to be great. Drinks and appetizers are brought very promptly. And if the entrees come a little slow, it usually is a welcomed wait to help recover from the generous portion sizes of the appetizers.

Plan to go early if you are going on the weekend, as it does get packed by 6:00. A sign of the obvious good food! The wait is never painful, as you are able to sit at the bar and order appetizers while waiting for a table.

One of my favorite restaurants. I cant wait to go back!

Nello's is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is absolutely top notch and I have never had a bad meal there. Every time I go it is packed full of people, which is really the best measure of a restaurant. The wonderful Italian atmosphere really puts you in the mood for a full Italian meal and Nello, working his magic in the kitchen, always delivers.

The main reason I go to Nello's is for the pasta. It is perfectly cooked every time and the traditional Italian flavors are really on full display. As if this wasn't enough, the portions are massive! I've never actually finished a plate of pasta at Nello's, I always have enough left over for a full lunch.

One of my go to dishes is the penne puttanesca. At Nello's it is made with sirloin beef, jalapenos, capers, garlic, olives, onions and mushrooms which all mixes into such a delicious sauce that I've just made myself drool over right now.
Another favorite is the spaghetti carbonara, which features bacon, mushrooms and eggs actually cooked by the heat of the pasta the way it should be!

As far as appetizers go, the bruschetta is some of the best in the city. The topping comes in a bowl with two spoons surrounded by pieces of what must be a full baguette. Trust me, two people can find themselves suddenly filled up by the bruschetta before the entrees even come!

As I mentioned before, Nello's is always jam packed and this has given rise to a few odd and almost insulting "policies." They don't take reservations for 4 people or less; apparently the walk up business is more than enough to fill the restaurant. Still, this makes it tough to plan a night out when you don't know how long it will take for a table to open up (in my experience, 15-20 minutes is the norm). As well, when making a reservation for 6 people I was coolly told that if there was a no-show we would be charged a fee for wasting a seat! I'm not exactly sure where Nello's starts to provide efficient and competent service, which it always does while at the restaurant, but it is not when making reservations, that's for sure.

Overall, once you actually sit down at Nello's you are in store for a treat. I highly recommend the food, especially the pasta, and whenever somebody asks me for a recommendation Nello's is always one of the first restaurants out of my mouth.
