I love diners, Mom and Pop's and German food. I hate Barb and Ernie's. When I moved to Edmonton my sister raved about the Eggs Benedict which she hadn't had in years. As a treat we went for brunch. After watching B&E's Euro vacation video playing endlessly and soundlessly on the TV our food arrived. Highlights included: Eggs Benedict: absolutely dessicated streaky (not back/Canadian bacon) bacon and cold sauce. Potato pancakes: leftover mix/batter made into soggy pancakes (no grated/fresh potato involved) under a pile of whipped cream. Sub-par sausages: in a German restaurant this is unforgivable and as lazy as the service. Maybe this place was better years ago but it's time the "Best Eggs Benedict" sign be surrendered to the Brewster's at Meadowlark Mall. Don't brag about your food and then serve overpriced leftovers. Speaking of which: B&E's sauerbraten is so bad the family dog wouldn't eat it. Rejected by a dog is about as low as you can go.

I really am quite surprised by this incident, especially having frequented this restaurant on many occasions. All started off well until my friend ordered something and wasn't able to eat the item because she didn't realize the item would come with raw onions. All she wanted was to have the item replaced with cooked onions. Ernie was beyond rude and may I say very, very loud about it in front of all other customers. I have never been so shocked and embarrassed. He accused my friend of wanting to get a free meal. I have never witnessed an owner or manager treat any customer in such a fashion. Where is the old adage of the customer is always right? Needless to say, I packed up my order because we no longer felt comfortable there. I paid for my order and explained to Barb (Ernie's wife) that I had intended to pay for both orders and my friend only wanted the item replaced. No one said we weren't going to pay. Barb and the servers apologized for the incident and all the while, Ernie continued to chastise my friend while I paid. My friend told him that we wouldn't be back and he said "good". WOW, BEWARE OF SAYING ANYTHING AFTER RECEIVING YOUR ORDER!!! I’ve heard of having a bad day, but this was ridiculous.
